Introducing Camryn & Alicia

Camryn and Alicia’s Chrysler Museum of the Art wedding in Norfolk, Virginia was sophisticated and elegant. Their wedding colors were white, black, and touches of gold. When imagining their wedding day portraits, Camryn and Alicia wanted to utilize the Chrysler Museum of Art’s gorgeous architecture as well as the scenic streets of Freemason District. We specifically chose my favorite section on W Bute St. and Botetourt St.

How The Day Unfolded

Their wedding took place on a clear and beautiful September day. Preparations began at the beautiful Hilton Main in Downtown Norfolk. I favor this hotel a lot because it is perfect for getting ready photos. Investing in the corner rooms to give you floor to ceiling windows is a must if you want to ensure the best natural lighting as possible! As preparations began, Alicia and Camryn enjoyed the company of their wedding party, exchanged gifts, and took in the moment with their families. Before departing to their venue, Alicia shared a private first look with her father on the stunning 3rd floor of the hotel!

Once at the venue, the bride and groom shared their own first look before taking photos around the museum and downtown Norfolk. Some key moments I remember about their wedding was the personal vows they exchanged during the ceremony. Listening to them read their vows aloud to one another made it clear to everyone that they really are two hearts who finally found each other and are now beating as one.

Camryn and Alicia really LOVE one another and it showed so clearly throughout their wedding day. Another key moment for me was their outdoor night time photos! I don’t get an opportunity to photograph many of these so when Camryn and Alicia told me they were interested in doing them, I couldn’t wait! I am very proud of how those images turned out!

The Venue

The Chrysler Museum of the Art is a favorite venue for many couples looking to have a Norfolk wedding. The neutral toned building and elegant architecture allows it to compliment many wedding styles and aesthetics. There are also many locations within walking distance that can be used for portrait backdrops.

When planning your wedding, it is important to know when the sun sets on your wedding day and where it sets. The sun happens to set right in front of the Chrysler Museum. This means, taking photos in front of the stunning doors and arches might have to wait until later in the day unless the weather is cloudy or gray and the sun is more diffused on your wedding day. However, the arches behind the building work amazingly well at pretty much any time of day. Working with the venue and your photographer will help ensure your portrait time slots and strategically selected to ensure the best lighting possible when you are outside.

FAQ

  1. What is the best season for the Chrysler Museum of the Art?
    • honestly, all season but spring and fall is where this venue really shines!
  2. What time should my ceremony take place if I want outdoor photos?
    • Assuming your ceremony last about 30 minutes, I suggest your ceremony begins 2 hours before the sun sets. this will leave room for family portraits, wedding party photos, and newlywed photos without feeling rushed for light. If you plan on having a first look and all your other photos taken beforehand, your ceremony can start a little bit later while still saving time for some sunset photos with your love!
  3. Are there any indoor/outdoor considerations?
    • Yes! When we photograph at the Chrysler Museum, we almost alway add flash photography during your ceremony and reception. When looking for a photographer, ask to see how they light this space. There are so many lighting techniques and styles and you want to ensure that you look their flash photography just as much as their naturally lit ones.

As wedding photographers, we are often told by clients beforehand that they are awkward and nervous in front of a camera and that they just want to look and feel natural!  We all can relate to that!  I too feel awkward during family photos.  However, I've learned that by having a strong ability to notice the small details and to respect ones natural body,  we can make every look great and feel like their natural selves!
