Lashonda and Waskin’s Downtown Norfolk Engagement Session was all that I wanted it to be and MORE!  Why?  Because as a Virginia Wedding Photographer, I typically shoot sessions on the beach or at a nature park.  So when Lashonda decided to use the heart of Downtown Norfolk as her backdrop, I knew her session was going to be unique and special.

Photographing in Downtown Norfolk with all the tall buildings can be tricky!  As a photographer, I knew I had to look at the light a little differently and I had to be very selective about the buildings I chose to surround my couple.  Luckily, Downtown Norfolk provided great neutral buildings that gave us beautiful clean light!

Lashonda and Waskin chose Norfolk for their session because they used to frequent this area while they were in college.  Lashonda attended George Mason University and Waskin attended Norfolk State University which is right down the road!  Lashonda’s red dress complimented the city backdrop so well and it added just enough pop to allow them stand out!

I’m thrilled to share their session on the blog and if their engagement session is any sign of how amazing their wedding is going to be, then I can WAIT for October of next year when the tie the knot at the HPO!!

Enjoy our favorites from their Downtown Norfolk Engagement Session!

*This last photo is so special to me and I know it’s special to Lashonda and Waskin.  As we were finishing up their session, an out of town couple was nearby and started chatting with them about their engagement and wedding plans.  They admired Lashonda’s gorgeous ring and offered words of encouragement to them.  As the conversation ended, this beautiful couple asked if they could pray for Lashonda & Waskin.  Their spirit was so welcoming and pure that the encounter did not seem awkward at all.  So glad I was able to capture this moment..

As wedding photographers, we are often told by clients that they are awkward and nervous in front of a camera and that they just want to look and feel natural!  We all can relate to that!  I too feel awkward during family photos.  However, I've learned that by having a strong ability to pose and to notice the small details, we can make every look great and feel like their natural selves!
